RHD BYD & GAC Cars for Mozambique Dealers: A Practical 2026 China Sourcing Guide

A car dealer in Maputo is not simply buying a vehicle from China.

He is buying inventory that needs to sell.

That means the important questions are different from those of an individual buyer:

Will the specification work in Mozambique?
Can spare parts be supplied later?
How many units fit in one container?
Can the supplier provide VIN information before shipment?
What happens when a vehicle needs a replacement headlamp, suspension part or electronic module six months later?

For Mozambique dealers considering new right-hand-drive BYD and GAC vehicles from China, these questions matter far more than finding the lowest FOB price.

This guide explains how we normally approach a Mozambique dealer order, which RHD models deserve attention, what documents are involved, and how dealers can reduce risk before committing to a larger shipment.

Mozambique Is Fundamentally a Right-Hand-Drive Market

Mozambique drives on the left side of the road and vehicles normally have the steering wheel on the right.

This sounds obvious, but it immediately removes many Chinese domestic-market vehicles from consideration.

Mozambique's current import guidance also restricts the importation of left-hand-drive vehicles for commercial use. For a dealer building inventory, sourcing a genuine factory-produced RHD specification should therefore be one of the first requirements—not an afterthought.

For Chinese vehicle sourcing, we normally confirm three things before discussing price:

Is this particular model actually available as a factory RHD vehicle?
Is the RHD specification suitable for export to the target market?
Can the VIN, specification sheet and supporting export documents be provided?

A converted LHD vehicle and a factory RHD vehicle are not the same product.

For professional dealerships, we strongly prefer factory RHD vehicles.

Which Chinese RHD Vehicles Make Sense for Mozambique?

There is no single “best Chinese car” for every Mozambique dealer.

The right stock depends on whether the dealership serves Maputo families, corporate fleets, premium buyers, pickup customers or price-sensitive EV buyers.

For a first container, we would normally build the model mix around cars that customers can understand quickly.

BYD RHD Models Worth Considering
Model Type Why It Can Work for Mozambique
BYD ATTO 2 Compact EV SUV Lower entry price and practical urban size
BYD ATTO 3 Electric SUV Mature international model with strong brand recognition
BYD Dolphin Electric hatchback Suitable for city driving and buyers wanting a lower-cost EV
BYD Sealion 7 Electric SUV Strong option for upper-middle-income family buyers
BYD Sealion 6 PHEV SUV Useful where customers want electric driving without depending completely on charging
BYD Shark 6 PHEV pickup Particularly interesting for African pickup markets
BYD M6 MPV Potential family, hotel, corporate and commercial-use vehicle

For many Mozambique dealers, ATTO 3, Sealion 7 and Shark 6 deserve special attention because they occupy three very different customer segments.

The ATTO 3 is relatively easy to position as an everyday electric SUV.

The Sealion 7 gives a dealer a more premium product.

The Shark 6 addresses a completely different market—the double-cab pickup buyer who may otherwise be considering traditional diesel pickups.

GAC RHD Models Worth Watching

GAC also gives dealers several interesting options, particularly through the AION and HYPTEC product families.

Model Type Possible Dealer Positioning
GAC AION UT Compact EV Entry-level and urban EV customers
GAC AION Y Plus Electric SUV/MPV crossover Family and ride-hailing/fleet potential
GAC AION V Electric SUV Mainstream family EV segment
GAC HYPTEC HT Premium electric SUV Higher-end buyers wanting technology and long range

Not every specification is available in every market at the same time, so dealers should request the current RHD export specification, rather than relying on specifications found on Chinese consumer websites.

This is especially important for battery size, ADAS functions, onboard connectivity, charging standards and software.

Don't Start With 20 Cars Just Because the Price Is Attractive

One mistake we regularly see with new importers is trying to negotiate a large wholesale order before they know which model their market actually wants.

For a new Mozambique partnership, a smaller test shipment is usually more useful.

A dealer might begin with a mix such as:

one affordable EV;
one mainstream family SUV;
one higher-spec SUV;
and, if relevant to the dealership's customer base, a pickup or PHEV.

The first shipment should answer real commercial questions.

Which vehicle brings customers into the showroom?

Which one generates WhatsApp enquiries?

Which model receives deposits?

Which specification is too expensive?

What colours sell?

What questions do customers repeatedly ask?

Those answers are worth more than a theoretical market report.

Once the dealership has actual sales data, the second shipment can be much more focused.

A Real Container Calculation Matters More Than a Cheap Unit Price

Dealers should never compare vehicle prices without looking at container utilization.

For example, based on vehicle dimensions and shipping plans we currently use:

40HQ container:

BYD ATTO 3 — approximately 3 units
BYD Sealion 7 — approximately 3 units
BYD Shark 6 — approximately 2 units

A 20-foot container will normally be used for one vehicle.

The final loading plan should always be reconfirmed for the exact model and specification before booking.

This matters because a dealer buying three cars in one container distributes ocean freight and destination charges across three units.

A poorly planned combination may increase the landed cost of every vehicle.

This is one reason we recommend discussing the whole shipment, not simply asking:

“What is your cheapest FOB price?”

The cheaper vehicle is not necessarily the cheaper vehicle once it reaches Maputo.

Maputo Is the Natural First Port for Many Mozambique Dealers

For dealers serving southern Mozambique, Port of Maputo is the obvious port to evaluate first.

Maputo has a dedicated vehicle terminal operated for automotive cargo, with capacity for approximately 115,000 vehicles annually and facilities for vehicle inspection, handling and storage. It also handles international vehicle-carrier traffic.

For businesses operating farther north, Beira and Nacala may also need to be evaluated depending on the final destination and shipping route.

Mozambique customs guidance notes that Beira and Nacala also play an important role in regional transit cargo, particularly toward neighbouring Southern African markets.

For China-origin vehicles, shipments can be arranged from ports such as Nansha, Guangzhou, subject to the shipping line, battery classification, vehicle type and current sailing schedule.

Dealers should request quotations in a format that makes the cost structure clear:

FOB China

or

CFR/CIF Maputo

rather than accepting a quotation where freight, insurance and local charges are mixed together without explanation.

EV and PHEV Shipping Needs to Be Checked Before Booking

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are different from ordinary non-battery cargo.

Shipping lines can impose specific requirements relating to traction batteries, vehicle state of charge, dangerous-goods documentation and booking approval.

PHEV shipments can be particularly restrictive depending on the carrier and route.

A Mozambique dealer should therefore avoid assuming that any two vehicles can automatically be mixed into the same container.

Before payment, confirm:

exact model;
battery type and capacity;
EV or PHEV classification;
departure port;
destination port;
container combination;
shipping-line acceptance;
and any DG surcharge or documentation requirement.

This should be done before the vehicles are ready—not after they arrive at the export warehouse.

What Documents Should a Mozambique Dealer Expect?

A professional vehicle shipment should have a clear document trail.

Depending on the transaction and local customs requirements, the export package can include:

Commercial Invoice
Shows the seller, buyer, vehicle information and transaction value.

Packing List
Lists the vehicles and shipment details.

Bill of Lading
Issued for the sea shipment.

VIN / Chassis Number Information
Critical for checking the identity of each vehicle.

Certificate of Origin
Where applicable and required.

Vehicle Specification Sheet
Useful for both customs preparation and dealership sales staff.

Export Declaration / Supporting Export Documents
Prepared as required for the China export process.

Additional certificates can depend on the model and Mozambique's current regulatory or inspection requirements.

Mozambique's tax authority states that commercial importers must be registered through the relevant government process and hold importer authorization. Dealers should therefore work with a licensed local customs broker before the vehicles depart China rather than waiting until they arrive at port.

How Should a Dealer Calculate the Real Landed Cost?

There are at least five numbers a dealer should know:

1. Vehicle purchase price

2. China-side export and handling cost

3. International freight

4. Mozambique customs duties and VAT

5. Destination port, clearance and inland delivery charges

Mozambique applies import duties according to the applicable tariff classification. Published commercial guidance states that import tariffs can range from 0% to 25%, while many consumer goods fall around the 20% level. Import VAT is currently 16%. The exact vehicle tax should therefore be calculated using the correct HS classification rather than assuming every car receives one standard tax rate.

For a dealership, the useful calculation is:

China vehicle cost + logistics + customs + local clearance + preparation = landed inventory cost

Only after that should the dealer add:

sales margin + warranty reserve + marketing + finance cost + after-sales reserve

That number tells you whether the vehicle actually makes commercial sense in Mozambique.

The Most Important Dealer Question Is Often Spare Parts

The first vehicle sale gets attention.

The first replacement part builds—or destroys—the dealership's reputation.

If you intend to sell Chinese EVs seriously in Mozambique, spare parts need to be discussed before the first container leaves China.

For an initial order, dealers can consider preparing a small fast-moving parts package.

The exact list depends on the model, but typically the discussion should include items such as:

filters where applicable;
brake pads;
wiper components;
common suspension parts;
lamps;
exterior trim;
charging accessories;
selected sensors;
and frequently damaged body components.

More expensive electronic modules do not necessarily need to be stocked in large quantities, but there should be a clear method for identifying and ordering them using the VIN.

A dealer should ask the supplier:

Can you source parts using my vehicle VIN six months after delivery?

That is a much better question than simply asking whether “parts are available.”

Software, SIM Cards and Connected Features Need Realistic Expectations

Chinese vehicles are becoming increasingly software-dependent.

Some functions may rely on:

manufacturer servers;
mobile data;
regional SIM services;
smartphone applications;
navigation databases;
or OTA software support.

A vehicle physically operating in Mozambique does not automatically mean every China-market connected function will operate there.

For this reason, dealers should ask for the export version and current functionality, especially when buying vehicles with advanced connected services.

We prefer to identify limitations before the sale instead of promising functions that cannot be guaranteed locally.

For a dealership, managing customer expectations is part of after-sales service.

Independent Importing Is Not the Same as Becoming an Authorized BYD or GAC Dealer

This distinction is important.

Buying new BYD or GAC vehicles through an export supply channel does not automatically grant official manufacturer dealership rights in Mozambique.

An independent dealer may import and resell legitimately sourced vehicles subject to local rules, but phrases such as:

“Official BYD Dealer”

or

“Authorized GAC Distributor”

should only be used when the dealership has a direct authorization agreement with the manufacturer or its authorized regional organization.

For many established African vehicle traders, independent importing is a practical way to test demand before discussing a larger brand-level partnership.

But the two business models should not be confused.

What We Would Check Before Accepting a Mozambique Dealer Order

Before finalizing an order, we normally want the following information:

Target city: Maputo, Matola, Beira, Nampula or another market.

Buyer type: established dealership, vehicle importer, fleet operator or new automotive business.

Preferred powertrain: EV, PHEV, petrol or a combination.

Target retail price: not just the maximum China purchase price.

First-order quantity: one test unit, mixed container or larger wholesale order.

Required brands: BYD, GAC or both.

Vehicle segment: compact EV, family SUV, premium SUV, MPV or pickup.

Destination port: Maputo, Beira or another agreed port.

With these details, a dealer quotation can be built around a business case rather than simply sending a 50-model price list.

A Sensible First Shipment for a Mozambique Dealer

Imagine a dealership in Maputo that has traditionally sold Japanese SUVs and pickups but wants to test new Chinese energy vehicles.

Instead of ordering six identical EVs, the dealership could compare three different customer groups.

For example:

BYD ATTO 3 RHD
For mainstream family EV buyers.

BYD Sealion 7 RHD
For customers looking for a larger, more premium electric SUV.

GAC AION or HYPTEC RHD model
To test demand for an alternative Chinese EV brand.

A pickup-focused dealer might instead build its first order around the BYD Shark 6 RHD PHEV.

There is no universal formula.

The point of a trial shipment is to discover what Mozambique customers will actually pay for.

Why Chinese RHD Supply Is Becoming More Interesting for African Dealers

For years, African RHD markets depended heavily on Japanese brands, used Japanese imports and vehicles supplied through South Africa.

That structure is changing.

Chinese manufacturers now have considerably broader RHD portfolios, including:

battery-electric SUVs;
plug-in hybrid SUVs;
pickups;
MPVs;
compact urban EVs;
and premium electric vehicles.

The opportunity for Mozambique dealers is therefore not simply “cheap Chinese cars.”

The more interesting opportunity is new product segmentation.

A dealer can potentially offer a 500 km-class EV, a high-performance electric SUV or a plug-in hybrid pickup in categories where customers previously had very limited choice.

The dealer that understands the vehicle and supports it properly has a stronger position than the dealer who competes only on price.

Questions Mozambique Dealers Frequently Ask
Can I import right-hand-drive BYD vehicles from China to Mozambique?

Yes, provided the selected model has an appropriate factory RHD configuration and the shipment complies with current Mozambique import and customs requirements. Model availability should be confirmed before ordering.

Does Mozambique use RHD vehicles?

Yes. Traffic drives on the left and vehicles normally use right-hand drive. Current commercial import guidance also restricts LHD vehicles intended for commercial use.

Which BYD RHD models are suitable for Mozambique?

Depending on current availability, models worth evaluating include the BYD ATTO 2, ATTO 3, Dolphin, Sealion 6, Sealion 7, Shark 6 and M6.

Are GAC electric vehicles available in RHD?

Several GAC-family vehicles have RHD configurations for international markets, including selected AION and HYPTEC products. Exact model availability and export specification should be confirmed for each order.

Can you ship cars from China to Maputo?

Yes. China-to-Mozambique vehicle shipments can be arranged subject to vessel schedules, shipping-line acceptance and the vehicle's battery classification.

Can three cars fit into one 40HQ container?

For selected models, yes. For example, our current loading plans can accommodate approximately three BYD ATTO 3 or three BYD Sealion 7 vehicles in a 40HQ container. Larger vehicles such as the BYD Shark 6 generally require a different loading plan.

Can a Mozambique dealer start with one car?

Yes. A single test unit is possible, although container and logistics economics should be considered. Dealers planning regular sales normally obtain better logistics efficiency from a coordinated multi-unit shipment.

Can spare parts be supplied later?

For vehicles we source, parts enquiries can be handled using model and VIN information. Dealers planning continuous retail sales should discuss a starter spare-parts package before the first shipment.

Are these vehicles official Mozambique dealer vehicles?

Vehicle supply and official brand authorization are two different matters. Independent vehicle sourcing does not automatically provide official BYD or GAC distributor status.

Before You Ask for a Price, Send These Seven Details

If you operate a dealership or vehicle-import business in Mozambique, a useful quotation request should include:

Brand: BYD / GAC / both
Model: if already known
Quantity: number of units
Powertrain: EV / PHEV
Required specification: RHD
Destination: Maputo / Beira / other
Target price segment: economy / mainstream / premium

With this information, we can compare suitable RHD models, loading combinations and shipment options instead of sending a generic catalogue.

For professional Mozambique dealers, we can also discuss mixed-model trial orders, dealer pricing, vehicle inspection before shipment, VIN confirmation, spare-parts sourcing and repeat container supply from China.

The objective is not simply to put a Chinese car on a ship.

It is to help the dealer receive stock that can actually be sold, supported and reordered.
